For background information and symptoms of a systemic Candida infection please read here.
No fruit or sugar is NOT easy! Especially on a plant-based diet. For that reason, I had to make my own Candida diet to better suit my needs. Typically, the Candida diet does not include beans and legumes because they are starchy but there is no chance I could survive without them! Grains and beans are a great source of protein in the plant-based diet.
In addition to dietary changes, adding in some natural anti-fungals and upping probiotics intake to 100-150 billion/ day will help to balance the gut. Probiotics are like good soldiers, crowding out the yeast and the anti-fungals are like hit men that bomb that excess Candida.
Here are a list of some natural anti-fungal supplements:
- Colloidal Silver
- Caprylic acid
- Cloves capsules
- Grapefruit Seed Extract
- Oil of Oregano
- Olive Leaf Extract
It is best to alternate anti-fungal treatments so that the yeast doesn’t become resistant to just one but don’t go and take 5 different treatments at once, you will end up feeling veryyyyy sick. Discuss these options with your healthcare practitioner to make sure you get what is right for you!
As the Candida are starved out by diet and killed by the supplements, they release something like 71 different toxins into the body. This of course stresses the liver and kidneys as they have to work extremely hard to process everything. This detox and healing process presents flu-like symptoms.
Here are some signs of Candida ‘Die-off’ or as I like to call it Healing Reactions:
- Swollen glands
- Bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhea
- Increased joint or muscle pain
- Elevated heart rate
- Chills, cold feeling in your extremities
- Body itchiness
- Hives or rashes
- Skin breakouts
- Recurring vaginal, prostate and sinus infections
The reactions will be different for everyone based on the intensity of your treatment and the severity of your Candida infection. If you are reacting very strongly, its suggested that you take a step back and lower your dose of anti-fungals. Its just too much, too soon. To help with this detox process and to lessen the symptoms one should:
- reduce stress
- take vitamin c
- slow down anti-fungal dosing
- take detox herbs (milk thistle, dandelion, artichoke, etc.)
- exercise, sweat it out!
- dry brush & use contrast showers
Dealing with healing reactions is never fun but a very necessary part of the process. Know that it will take time but soon you will be back in balance and on your way to the most healthy, vibrant version of yourself!
